Rush to
Oppose Postal Rate Hikes July
8, 2010
In
response
to the Postal Service's Tuesday announcement that it intends to raise
postal rates by ten times the rate permissible by law, members of the
mailing community from around the country have raced to join the newly
formed Affordable Mail Alliance (www.affordablemailalliance.org) to add
their voice to the overwhelming chorus opposed to the unlawful rate
increase.
Since
it was
officially announced Tuesday, the Alliance has added over 250 new
members. Now totaling over 300, the Alliance includes nonprofit
organizations, large and small businesses, consumer groups and everyday
customers who use the Post Office to conduct business, share
correspondence, and support commerce.
The
members
of the Alliance are united in their message: the proposed rate hikes
amount to a tax that will result in job losses across the entire
economy when Americans can least afford it. The swelling ranks of the
Alliance are joining together to ask the Postal Regulatory Commission
to protect Americans against these rate hikes.
On
Tuesday,
the Affordable Mail Alliance called on the Postal Regulatory Commission
to reject the United States Postal Service’s new proposal. The Postal
Service is asking the five-person Postal Regulatory Commission to waive
a rule requiring that postal rate increases stay in line with inflation
– a law designed to protect Americans from just this kind of rate hike.
